My idol

My Idol

My Idol is Al Khawarizmi, the inventor of Algebra and number zero. I admire him so much because I think the world would have been very different without his invention. His full name was Muhammad ibn Musa Al Khawarizmi. Western people have several names for him : Al Khawarizmi, Al Cowarizmi, Al Ahawizmi, Al Karismi, Al Goritmi, Al Gorismi, and many other. Al Khawarizmi was born in Bukhara/Khawarizm (now called Khiva, Uzbekistan) in 780 C.E. and died in Bagdad in 850 C.E. He was not only an expert in Mathematics, but also in the fields of philosophy, logic, arithmetic, music, history of Islam, and chemistry.

Almost his entire life, Al Khawarizmi spent working as a lecturer at the School of Honor in Baghdad, precisely in Bayt al-Hikmah, Baghdad. He worked in an observatory, which was a place for studying mathematics and astronomy. Besides, Al Khawarizmi was believed to lead the caliph library. He had introduced the Indian numbers and the Indian calculation system in the Islamic world. He was also an encyclopedia author in various disciplines.

The first book written by him was entitled algebra. That book discussed the systematic solution of linear and quadratic notation. Since then, he was called 'the father of algebra' or we, Indonesians, often call him Bapak Aljabar.

These numbers were invented by Al-Khawarizmi

He wrote so many books. The first book was Al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr wa-l-muqābala. This book discussed the systematic solution of linear and quadratic notation. The second book was Kitāb al-Jam’a wa-l-tafrīq bi-ḥisāb al-Hind. It contains Dixit algorizmi, arithmetic, and astronomic table. The third book, surest Al-Art was about planetarium reconstruction, weather zone, as well as the influence of latitude and longitude to the weather. Other books, Zij Al-Sindhind and Risala fi istikhraj Ta’rikh Al-yahud, discussed about astronomy.

A Latin translation of Al-Khawarizmi's Zij

A page from Al-Khawarizmi's Algebra
Al-Khawarizmi's personality has been recognized by Moslem people and the Western world. It could be proved by G. Sarton's statement which said "the highest achievements have been obtained by east people...". Another figure, Wiedmann said 'Al Khawarizmi had a firm personality and the devoted his life to science wold'.

Khawarizmi statue in Amir Kabir University

Statue of Al Khawarizmi in his home town, Khiva, Uzbekistan
Because of his achievements, people built a statue of him. We cannot imagine a world without his inventions. It could have been very difficult to do the counting and understand the universe. There would have been no jobs such as engineer, accountant, cashier or astronaut. There would have been no satellites, no spacecrafts and no computers. Technology development would have been very slow without his brilliant innovations.

Dewa Athena

Dewa Athena

Dewa Athena is a school event with sports theme. All classes are expected to join every kind of sport. This event is held by OSIS every year so that students from the same school year have the opportunity to know each other and to strengthen their bond of union. In addition, this school event is aimed to promote students' physical health because like I said before, the theme of this school event is sport. This year Dewa Athena was held on Saturday, 25th March, 1st April 2017, and 8th April in Lapangan Bali from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Although Dewa Athena is organized by OSIS, all students of SMAN 3 Bandung have to attend and participate with no exception.

There were a lot of sports games such as men's and women's basketball, men's and women's futsal, men's and women's double badminton, gobak sodor (Indonesian traditional sport), relay race, and tug of war. Not surprisingly it took three days to hold Dewa Athena event. Besides, due to a big number of sports events contested, there were also participants from Xth and XIth grades. Every level has about ten classes. So the total participants in this event were about 20 classes.

The first day of this event, on 25th March 2017, my class joined gobak sodor match at 7 a.m., following relay race against X MIPA 2, and men's double badminton in the afternoon. Actually, after OSIS handed the competition form, I wrote my name in the contestant column for gobak sodor. Unfortunately, since my mother had to take my sister to bimbel (extra lesson after school) before she took me to lapangan Bali, I arrived late and missed the game, so another student had to take my position.

I arrived in lapangan Bali at 8.30 a.m., when my relay race class competition was about to start. I did not know what to do there because all of my class competitions had finished except men's double badminton. Of course I could not participate. It was for boys. In my bad mood, suddenly my mother called me and asked me if I wanted to visit our sick relative in Tasikmalaya with her. Without thinking, I immediately said yes because I heard that his condition was getting worse and I thought there were no more competitions. But I was wrong, there was still tug of war. I did not want to waste my time, so while waiting for my mom to pick me up, I joined the tug of war.

There were two rounds in tug of war. In the first round, my class lost. When I wanted to participate in the next round, my mom came to pick me up. Sadly, I asked for permission to leave.

8th April 2017 was the third day of Dewa Athena event. My class had only one game left-the final men's double badminton against X MIPA 2. Actually, there were two other important events besides Dewa Athena on that day. They were Paman Gober event and invitation for my homeroom teacher's daughter's wedding. The three events were overlapping, so I had to manage the time wisely. I finally decided to join Paman Gober  from 7 to 10 in the morning, followed by watching my final men's double badminton and then attended the wedding reception.

Anggun (me), Keiko, Alfath, and Juanet

My friends and I took a picture with our homeroom teacher

That day was really tiring for me because I determined to attend the three events in one day. Thank God, I could attend all of them. The last event finished at 3 in the afternoon. At the end of the day, I came back home feeling tired but satisfied. All I wanted to do was to sleep and dream about today.

Nature

Nature

Nature consists of biotic and abiotic components. Biotic components consist of living things such as animals, plants, humans, and others. While abiotic components consist of inanimate objects. All of those components are interconnected so that there is a reciprocal relationship between both of them. This reciprocal relationship is not always profitable for both. It is only profitable for one party and harmful for the other. All of this reciprocal relationship is called symbiosis.

One of symbiosis examples in life is between Rafflesia Arnoldi with its host plant, this  is called parasitism symbiosis, which is only profitable for one of the parties and harmful for the other. This symbiosis is a natural thing. Another example  is between human and nature. Nature provides human needs such as residence and food, while humans maintain and provide CO2 for nature. This is called mutualism symbiosis which is profitable for both parties. However, humans and nature are not always mutually beneficial. If humans act arbitrarily, nature will wrath. Finally, humans and nature will harm each other.

Humans often do arbitrarily without taking care of the nature. Cutting down trees for settlements and polluting water, air, and land. However I have been wondering why we as humans do not think about the negative impacts of all they did. I believe, we will receive kindness as a result of all our good deeds. On the other hand, bad actions will result in punishment. The punishment comes in the form of disasters such as  flood, landslides, and forest fires. Nature begins to show his anger if you treat it unfairly.

1. Humans throw garbage into the river
causing flood

2. Illegal logging without reforestation
causing landslide

There is a time when nature provides all the needs of humans, but there are times also when nature is wrath because of what humans did. When it is angry, it will slowly cause destruction to the earth, damages as a result of natural disasters, and extinction of the creatures that live on earth including humans. Not all humans are evil to the nature. Of course there are people who care to the environment and we have to be that kind of people. As people who care about the environment, there are so many things we can do. Reforestation after cuting down trees and selective cutting down will prevent flood and landslide. We can also do 3Rs (Recycle, Reuse, Reduce) to lower the high amount of litter on earth, use bicycle or walk to reduce air pollution and many  others.

As creatures who live on earth, we must always keep and maintain the nature so later it can still be used by our children and grandchildren.

My Holiday

                                                                           My Holiday

My Holiday was very nice. Although I just stayed in Bandung and did not go out of town, it was still fun. Why did I say so ? Because approaching new year, my father came home. I always miss my father so much since he works in Riau. My father rarely comes home. He returns home about once every three months. It makes our family members rarely get together.

On 30th December 2016 my father came. He brought a lot of gift that my sister and I liked. The gift was food such as Riau's bika ambon, some sweets, and pempek. As they  looked tasty, my family and I ate up pempek and Riau's bika ambon in the morning, just before the new year's day. After having breakfast with rice, some eggs and the food from my father, we went around the city by car and of course we did not forget to bring the sweets for our snack. All of the food given by my father was very delicious. Actually, one of the things that makes me happy when my father comes is when he brings the gift of food. If I do not buy snacks from the supermarket, I will quietly eat the food from my father. It always happens when my father comes home. I think, I am a snack monster.

My family and I spent the new year's eve at Hasan Saputra street.  It is in Turangga, an area in South of Bandung. That address is where my relatives live. We left the house at 9 P.M., and arrived there 10 P.M. Our house is quite far. In there, we cooked a lot of dishes, such as beef goulash, soup, tempe, tahu, and the food that Iike the most : satay. We kept cooking and finished at 11.30 P.M. It was so long, wasn't it ? It was because we grilled the satay by ourselves. We waited for the new year before we ate all of the food.

The 2017 new year finally arrived. My family and I were so excited at that moment. We talked while eating all of the food that we made. The new day, the new month, and the new year, each one was so amazing because it was  a holiday for all of us so we could spend our time with our family or with the people we love. I hope I could enjoy this moment again next year with my family.

Besides spending my holiday with my family, I also spent my time doing TST. It is my high school (SMAN 3) theatre practice. Practice like this is a routine but this was different from the usual. This was prepared for the theater performance with a student theme in Nagabonar event and I was one of the players in this performance. We all practiced every day the whole week just before we came back to school.

Actually doing this every day was tiring. However, I could do this because my friends and I encouraged each other. Besides my encouraging friends, there was also a coach who helped us to do our best for the show. It made our performance very good.

That was all about my last holiday. Like I said, I did not go anywhere but it was really fun. Spending my holiday with my family and practicing T'ST were more  than fun for me. I hope my next holiday will be full of happiness like this one.

Megantara

                                                                          Megantara

Megantara was a culture festival which has a function to show various Indonesian cultures. There was a food bazaar in Megantara, too. So, you could find different kinds of meals and snacks. In addition, there were guest stars like the Changcuters and RAN.

Those who came to this culture festival had to buy a ticket which cost a hundred thousand Rupiah. That was not cheap, was it ? Even though it was expensive, I did not care when I bought that ticket. Why did not I care about the price ? The answer is because I was really interested in the various Indonesian cultures.

First, I had to buy the ticket. I bought it from Marisa who was one of Megantara commitee members. The event was held on Saturday, 10th September 2016. But, before I came, there was a parade in the morning. The tenth grade students of SMAN 3 Bandung and some kindergarten kids.We and the kids walked passed Taman Lalu Lintas, that was wuite far. But, walking with the kids was really fun. The parade finished at 10.00. Meanwhile. Megantara itself began at 12.00. There was a two hour gap between 10.00 - 12.00, so my friends and I went to takolada.

After that, we prayed Dzuhur in a mosque quite far from the Megantara venue becase we went there on foot. Finally it was time for the event to begin. When it was 12.00 p.m., we were allowed to enter the venue. Inside like I mentioned before, we could find a lot of food sold there. Besides buying the food, we could also watch the Indonesian culture performances like a traditional dance, wayang golek or puppet show, and many others. The students of SMAN 3 participated by joining a traditional fashion show. They showed different traditional costumes from Papua, West Java, Sumatera, and other provinces.

In this venue there was a mushola where we could pray. This is because we still need to pray 5 times a day. At dusk, more and more people came. They were not just students and teachers from SMAN 3 Bandung, but also students from other schools or even adults. There were about a thousand people. Before we arrived at the top performance of Megantara (the guest stars, such as the Changcuters and RAN), Ridwan Kamil as mayor of Bandung announced the winner of the traditional costume competition. I could not believe my eyes : it was Ridwan Kami, the VIP person in Bandung. The winner of that competition was a student who was wearing the Papua costume.

I could not wait to see the guest stars, especially the Changsuters. I really like them. Just for your information, the Changsuters is from Bandung. That makes me like them so much. Oh, I almost forgot, before the guest star performances, there was a performance from T'ST (Teather SMAN 3 Bandung). It was amazing !

Actually, since I first saw the their performances, I determine to take T'ST as my extracuricullar activity. I think they always show the best performanrences. T'ST theme at Megantara was Indonesian culture. It ilustrated the ongoing culture extinction in Indonesia. Their show remind us as the SMAN 3 Bandung students to always take care of our culture and maintain its existance, for the sake of our future generation.

The guest stars seemed to be preparing themselves at the back stage. Why did I think so ? Because it took so long since the announcement of their performance by the MC before they finally came. I felt bored. But when they really were on stage and started performance. Started performing, the audience suddenly became boisterous. Even though the top performance was already late in the evening, the audience, including me was still full of spirit. We sang and sang together, despite our feeling tired of standing too long and waiting. RAN performed right after. It was fun but not as fun as the Changcuters. At last, the event came to its end. We went to our respective home and slept tight.
